Thames River Projects 2024 – Join us at a Project Update Meeting

For more information, the City of London is hosting a drop-in project update meeting to share the detailed designs of the Springbank Dam partial removal project as well as shoreline improvements to Harris Park. These projects were both recommended by the One River Master Plan Environmental Assessment, completed in 2019. This meeting is a chance to:

  • View preliminary designs of the dam decommissioning, planned improvements for the river’s edge, and park features.
  • Ask questions
  • Learn more about next steps

At the Project Update Meeting, City staff and the consulting teams will be available to present the design and discuss the scope of the project, impacts, and what’s next as well as how to contact us with questions or concerns. An overview of the projects is as follows:

Project 1: Springbank Dam Decommissioning

Partial removal of the Springbank Dam was selected as the preferred option recommended by the One River EA. This means that the mechanical gates will be removed; however, the concrete superstructure will remain in place, all to support the EA recommendation of a free-flowing river.  In addition, approximately 175 linear meters of concrete bank will be removed along the south shore of the Thames River, downstream of the dam. The south bank will be restored as a more naturalized shoreline with plantings and habitat improvements.  The City will be starting site preparations for the decommissioning of Springbank Dam such as tree removals before March 31, 2024.  Detours of the Thames Valley Parkway through Springbank Park will be expected for bicycles and pedestrians throughout the summer and fall.   Additional information about the project and PUM materials will be available after the meeting on the webpage: https://getinvolved.london.ca/springbankdam

Project 2: Harris Park Shoreline Improvements

As a follow up to the first PUM held on December 7, 2023 at Museum London, this PUM will provide a second opportunity for the public to view the City’s plans for shoreline improvements to Harris Park, including more detailed landscaping, tree planting and restoration plans.   The City of London is planning to replace the failing erosion control structures along the Thames River in Harris Park with more naturalized slope stabilization methods. As part of this project, Park improvements are planned in keeping with the One River EA including a lookout, fishing platform, and improved river access point. Construction is targeted to proceed in late July 2024. The project timing is being coordinated with Tourism London to allow for festivals to proceed earlier in July, including Rock the Park and the Great Outdoors Comedy Festival.  Additional information about the project and PUM materials will be available after the meeting on the webpage: https://getinvolved.london.ca/harrispark
