Join us to observe moths after dark and learn about their importance in our local ecosystems!
We will set up a mothing sheet and lights to attract moths. We will then be able to observe them up close and take photos to upload to iNaturalist. We expect to see a wide diversity of species - we’re secretly hoping to spot a luna moth!
This is also your opportunity to access Cedarcroft, Nature London’s private nature reserve. The exact location of the reserve will be shared upon registration. This beautiful plot of land is typically only open to Nature London members. If you’d like explore their trails in the day light then consider becoming a member! https://naturelondon.wildapricot.org/Join/
It's helpful to have a flashlight or headlamp to navigate around the area in the dark. Feel free to bring a lawn chair to rest while we wait for moths to appear. You can stay for the full event or just pop in for a short time if you’d rather not stay up too late. All ages are welcome.
Please download iNaturalist and create your free account in advance to be ready to make observations. iNaturalist is a free app that allows the community to help gather biodiversity data that are used for research and conservation. We can help teach you how to use the app when you arrive.
This event relies on proper weather. If it is too rainy or windy then we will cancel the event and notify you by email at least a couple of hours in advance.

We need YOUR help to track biodiversity in London, ON!
What is a Bioblitz?A bioblitz is a community-powered event where people come together to find and identify as many species as possible in a specific area, over a short period of time. Whether you're a seasoned naturalist or just curious about the world around you, bioblitzes are a fun and engaging way to explore local biodiversity.
Why iNaturalist?
We use iNaturalist to record observations during our bioblitzes. This free, easy-to-use app allows anyone to upload photos of plants, animals, fungi, and other organisms. Each observation contributes to a global database used by scientists, conservationists, and educators to better understand and protect biodiversity.
Your data helps:
- Track species over time
- Monitor changes in ecosystems
- Support conservation efforts
- Connect people with nature
Every observation counts - whether it's a rare bird or a common buckthorn. Together, we’re building a living record of London’s natural heritage.
Your observations contribute real data used by scientists, students, and conservation efforts.
NEW TO iNATURALIST?
No problem! Download the app. Create your free account. Then come 15 minutes early on any of the events and we'll have an iNaturalist Ambassador there ready to help teach you how to get started.
Let’s show the world the amazing biodiversity of our city!
