Project Description:

The PATCH is making enhancements to their Healing Garden, by increasing the ability to pollinate, learn, and develop. This year’s project focuses on creating a more accessible and inclusive environment at their Healing Garden, with an emphasis on supporting individuals with vision loss and other accessibility needs. Through this initiative, The PATCH aims to foster independence and provide a space where everyone can engage with food cultivation, regardless of ability. The PATCH has created a pollinator habitat, bat houses and inclusive garden signage for all visitors. They have created their clay compass, letters and numbers to help guide those with low vision. The bat houses and pollinator hotel will not only support local biodiversity, but will also add sensory elements to the space, allowing visitors to engage with the natural world through sound and touch.

The PATCH will partner with social services agencies, schools and care providers for people seeking an accessible and adaptive urban agriculture experience. The building process will be a community lead initiative with participants from Hutton House creating signage with mediums such as clay and wood.

This project will be created by and delivered to people with disabilities and barriers, including deaf blindness and autism. Many of the participants The PATCH assist live with food insecurity and struggle with stable housing and supports.
