World Car Free Day Activities in London 2024
Come Enjoy Free London Transit Service
Thanks to a generous donation from Dancor Corporation, travel on London Transit will be free of charge on Sunday, September 22nd. This means that Londoners can travel as often and as far as they wish throughout the day. This will be particularly useful as, among other locations, it comes during Doors Open London, with its theme of “Live. Work. Play: in the Forest City”, when places of worship, businesses, entertainment, museums and heritage organizations will be greeting Londoners of all ages. In addition, Ward 11 Councillor Skylar Franke and others will be engaging in “bus karaoke” on selected bus routes. Parks, malls and any location within reach of transit service can be accessed. Regardless of your destination, take advantage of free transportation with London Transit on World Car Free Day. The two-slot bike racks on the front of all LTC buses can even transport cyclists near these destinations or to participate in the next activity:
Come Discover Your Thames Valley Parkway
The Thames Valley Parkway comprises 43 km of trails along each of its North, South, and West branches. "Come Discover Your Thames Valley Parkway" celebrates this jewel of a resource that belongs to all Londoners. Cyclists, walkers, and users of other means of active transportation are invited to journey along their closest TVP branch towards the meeting point for all three branches, at the Forks of the Thames River. Refreshments will be available along each route: at Greenway Park on the West branch, at the Blackfriars bridge on the North branch, and at the Forks.
A booth run by the Thames Region Ecological Association (TREA) at the meeting point of all three routes near the Forks of the Thames river will address cycling safety, feature bike inspection tips and offer free helmet checks. Information will be available as well on the advantages of active transportation as a means of reducing our Greenhouse Gas emissions in order to lower our carbon footprints.
Close by on Thames Street, the Bicycle Cafe will feature guided tours of the TVP and free E-bike test rides. Children’s activities will be offered at both the TREA booth and the Bicycle Cafe, such as colouring and free cookies. Information about nearby Car Free Day activities on Dundas Place and in Wortley Village will also be available.
A related activity is a 7 km Car Free Day bike ride facilitated by London Cycle Link along the West branch. It will depart from the 7.0 km blue distance marker in Springbank Park at 1 p.m. and conclude at the Forks. For these activities, contact David Stanford, [email protected]
Whether one uses free transit, or employs active transportation to get there, the third activity is not to be missed:
Come Enjoy A Car Free Street in Wortley Village and Dundas Place
Another expression of World Car Free Day is the idea of a car-free street so that one can stroll freely and enjoy all it can offer without having to consider vehicular traffic along it. On Sunday, September 22nd, from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. a section of Wortley Road will be car-free. Dundas Place will also have pedestrian-only activities that day.
There will be walking tours around the Village, martial arts demonstrations, yoga, and for the youngsters there will be story times, games, and chalk for drawing on sidewalks. Visit the London Environmental Network’s booth to learn about volunteer opportunities and local sustainability initiatives. A bicycle valet service will be provided to park bikes.
Come and have lunch at the many sumptuous bistros and cafes on the street. Explore the unique shops and businesses - all without the noise and exhaust from cars. Contact Marian Robinson, [email protected]
