“For way too long, politicians and the people in power have gotten away with not doing anything at all to fight the climate crisis and the ecological crisis - but we can make sure that they don't get away with it any longer. Humanity is now standing at a crossroads. Which path will choose to take?” - Greta Thunberg Extinction Rebellion (XR) has grabbed headlines thanks to their peaceful protests across the world over the past year. This talk is an introduction to XR and highlights the emergency that we are facing, the urgency with which we must act in order to save humanity - and practical steps what we all can (and must) do now in order to avoid total ecological and social collapse. Earth is in ecological crisis: we are in the midst of the sixth mass extinction event this planet has experienced. Scientists believe we may have entered a period of abrupt climate breakdown. This is an unprecedented global emergency. Our children, our nation and our planet face grave risk. We will share the latest climate science on where our planet is heading, discuss some of the current psychology around climate change denial, and offer solutions through the study of social movements. This public talk has been given hundreds of times in the UK and was the main tool in increasing the numbers that have stood up to rebel. We would like that to happen here in Canada. Canada has one of the worst records in world when it comes to pollution, waste and environmental destruction - it is up to us all to change that. We are not trying to "save the planet" - we are at the point where we need to save ourselves. The Earth itself will go on...the issue is whether we as humans and all other species will be here too.
