PURPOSE OF POSITION:

The ALUS Elgin Program Lead is responsible for managing and expanding the ALUS program in Elgin County. This role involves working with oversight of the Lower Thames Valley Conservation Authority, with farmers, and local partners to implement and maintain environmental projects on agricultural lands. The role requires communicating with ALUS Canada, ALUS Elgin’s Partnership Advisory Committee (PAC), rightsholders, stakeholders, and program participants to ensure the successful delivery of the ALUS program that aligns with national objectives and local environmental priorities.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Candidates should hold a college or university degree in environmental science, biology, agricultural sciences, or related field.
  • A minimum of 3 years’ experience working in conservation, restoration, and/or agricultural stewardship.
  • Must hold practical knowledge of project management, ecological restoration, and agricultural practices.
  • Familiarity working within a decentralized organization structure.
  • Experience working to organize, track, and report financial data.
  • Proficiency in online tools and field equipment use, including GPS, MS Suite, video conferencing, ArcGIS and/or other mapping software, organization database(s), etc.
  • Demonstrated strong organizational, written/oral communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Creates and contributes to a positive work environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision and as part of a team.
  • A valid G-class driver’s license is required.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

The following is a non-exhaustive list of responsibilities that provides insight into program activities.

1. Delivery and Project Implementation:

Annual implementation of the ALUS Program on private agricultural lands.

a) Work under the guidance of the Lower Thames Valley Conservation Authority and the PAC

b) Conduct site visits to create landowner connections and support project site selection

c) Develop project proposals to be presented to the PAC during scheduled meetings

d) Monitor the success of established projects

2. Administrative:

Adhere to administrative and financial reporting policies and practices.

a) Actively manage the ALUS Elgin program budget

b) Administer conservation agreements with project participants

c) Maintain updated project information to input in the ALUS database

d) Achieve and document milestones that are tied to funding deliverables

e) Biannual reports to ALUS Canada on fiscal provisions to landowners.

3. Delivery of extension services:

a) Provide guidance to Farmer Liaisons and schedule ongoing site visits

b) Consolidate information sheets and extension notes for new participants

c) Document and work with landowners to develop a conservation project plan

4. Networking

Professionally network with a variety of partners, agencies, individuals and participating farmers interested in the ALUS Program.

a) Build and maintain relationships between project partners by delivering frequent and timely project updates

b) Explore opportunities with new partners and funding sources to build support for furthering the ALUS concept at a local level

5. Communications:

a) Adhere to branding while maintaining the program’s social media sites (e.g., Instagram, Facebook, Twitter)

b) Organize and attend public events

c) Create opportunities to expand the reach of the program

d) Work with ALUS Canada to update the ALUS Elgin website

6. Grant Writing and Fund Development:

a) Seek out relevant grant opportunities

b) Complete grant applications to support the program’s budget

COMPENSATION & HOURS:

This is a full-time position with a benefits package and an hourly rate of $28.60 to $30.50 (based on experience and qualifications). Working hours are 8:30 am—4:30 pm, Monday through Friday (35 hours/week). Some evening and weekend work may be required.
